Resident Researcher in Mathematical Finance – AIMS South Africa Research Centre

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an innovative, pan-African centre of excellence for post-graduate education, research and outreach which has achieved global recognition since opening its first centre in South Africa in 2003. AIMS centres offer a number of educational programs including a one-year taught Master’s program and postgraduate research. Each AIMS centre provides an intensive and broad education to over 50 African students each year and prepares them for leadership careers in academia, governance and industry. The AIMS educational program relies on top international lectures who teach in a  live-in learning environment.

Complementing the postgraduate academic programme at AIMS South Africa, located in Muizenberg, is the Research Centre whose mission is to conduct and foster outstanding research and learning in the mathematical sciences, thus contributing to the next generation of pan-African leaders in many spheres and the advancement of African science and academia within a multicultural environment. Since the inception of the Research Centre, the academic programme has included a popular module on Mathematical Finance and there is a constant demand for research projects in the area.

AIMS South Africa is seeking to appoint a Resident Researcher, who will contribute to the growth and development of this exciting area. Candidates should have a solid research record in an area of current international interest. Quality outweighs area of speciality. This is a contract position for a period of three years which is renewable dependent on satisfactory progress and funding.

Duties include the following:

  • Maintaining an active research programme
  • Contributing to the AIMS international profile
  • Introducing postgraduate students to research, and supervising Master’s, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows
  • Involvement in the teaching programmes at AIMS
  • Overseeing the preparation of essays by AIMS Master’s students

Requirements are the following:

  • A doctorate in the mathematical or physical sciences
  • A solid, growing research record and a good international profile
  • The ability to supervise and communicate with students and young researchers

Commencement of duties/visit: 1 November 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter
